Zooey Deschanel's sitcom, 'New Girl,' starts with big ratings; 'Glee' dips

Zooey Deschanel's "New Girl" opened strong Tuesday night on the tube, while the third season premiere of "Glee" hit a sour ratings note.

"Glee" attracted 8.9 million viewers Tuesday, a 32% drop from last fall's hyped second season premiere, ew.com reports.

Fox's "New Girl," starring indie film darling Deschanel, opened with about 10 million viewers, USA Today reports. The quirky show was created by "No Strings Attached" writer Liz Meriwether, a former Michigander and daughter of former Free Press publisher Heath Meriwether.

CBS's returning "NCIS" (19.5 million) and "NCIS: LA" (16.7 million) both made strong showings, and Poppy Montgomery's new procedural, "Unforgettable," scored 14 million viewers and won its 10 p.m. time slot.

ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" -- which sent its first dancing star home Tuesday (that would be Metta World Peace, the NBA player formerly known as Ron Artest) -- drew 14.5 million viewers, a 36% drop from its first results show last fall.

The end of R.E.M. as we know it
After more than 30 years together, the members of R.E.M. have gone their separate ways.

"To our fans and friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band," band members said in a statement posted on their Web site. "We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

The original foursome -- lead singer Michael Stipe, bassist Mike Mills, guitarist Peter Buck and drummer Bill Berry (who left the band in 1997) -- began playing music together in Athens, Ga., in 1980.

Tony Bennett apologizes
Tony Bennett has apologized for the comments he made about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while visiting with Howard Stern on Monday.

"My life experiences -- ranging from the Battle of the Bulge to marching with Martin Luther King -- made me a lifelong humanist and pacifist and reinforced my belief that violence begets violence and that war is the lowest form of human behavior," Bennett said in a statement sent Wednesday to the New York newspaper Newsday.

"I am sorry if my statements sested anything other than an expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my desire for peace throughout the world."

Bennett, appearing on Stern's Sirius XM show Monday, said, "They flew the plane in, but we caused it because we were bombing them and they told us to stop."

The 85-year-old musical legend said in his statement Wednesday that there's "no excuse for terrorism and the murder of the nearly 3,000 innocent victims."

NFL news: Eagles’ Maclin gets clean bill of health

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin has been given a clean bill of health after suffering a cancer scare.

Maclin, a former Missouri star who had missed training camp because of what has been called a “mysterious illness,” told Foxsports.com on Wednesday that a false test led doctors to believe he had contracted a form of cancer known as lymphoma.

But his final test came back negative, and he was cleared to play.

“That’s first and foremost, I want everyone to know I’m fine, I’m healthy,” Maclin, the Eagles’ first-round pick in 2009, said.

“I was tested for everything, and every single test came back negative. I don’t have mono, I don’t have AIDS, leukemia — all the things people were guessing on, there was nothing. I was being tested for lymphoma, and thank God everything has come back negative.

“I wanted my privacy on this until I had answers.”

During the offseason, Maclin began experiencing rapid weight loss, iron anemia and irregular results from blood tests.

On his birthday, May 11, a scan showed his lymph nodes were “enlarged and hot.” That’s a possible sign of lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic cells of the immune system. Maclin then went through a series of painful tests, including the insertion of large, needles through his back and into his chest to gather biopsy samples.

Bone marrow exams and radiology scans followed.

“It was all caused by an inflammatory virus,” Maclin said, “something that just runs its course through your body or you can treat with medicine. I didn’t need medicine. It’s just something I had to deal with.”

Because of the lockout, Maclin wasn’t able to address his health issues with Eagles head trainer Rick Burkholder.

Wednesday was a sigh of relief.

UGG Boots Outlet

UGG boots are not new products. However, they have become increasingly popular. Are you looking for UGG boots outlet? Look for UGG boots outlet; you are not alone, and have come to the right place. I was looking all over for UGG boots at a great price and I found them! I would like to share some strategies, and a tip to get a good deal on UGGs. Recently UGG boots have become a trendsetter with great designs as the UGGs tall boots and the new UGG boots. Due to this popularity trend and the large demand for these boots, footwear manufacturers have taken up producing imitation women UGG boots made of cowhide rather than sheepskin. If you intend to purchase authentic UGG boots, it is important to know where you can purchase them from a reliable source. UGG boots are all made in grade A sheepskin from Australia, the cow leather boots is a little cheaper than the fur one, less than 200.The leather and Australian wool is very expensive material.
I love my UGG boots! They are beautiful, soft, warm, and comfortable. I wear them all year round, with jeans and dresses, with or without socks. The soft 100% sheepskin fleece keeps my feet warm and the pure sheepskin insole makes me feel like I am walking on a cloud. I literally wear my UGGs in sunshine, rain or snow, from church to the store to the movies. I live in my UGGs and feel they are worth every penny. UGGs are very comfortable and popular, but can also be very expensive. However, with super soft comfort, high demand, and winter approaching, you can still find some good deals. UGG boots outlet is a far cry from a useless fashion accessory. They’re luxuriously soft. They provide pampering warmth in the winter. In the summer the sheepskin wicks away moisture, keeping me cool and dry after a day at the beach. They go with everything.
To find UGG boots outlet for cheap sale visit the UGGs outlet blog. I have saved you some time and done most of the “comparison shopping” leg work for you. It has some great deals listed. So enjoy shopping, enjoy your UGGs, and stay warm!

Draft day decisions in question

The NFL Draft is this week. Start the clock with these random thoughts for a Tuesday:

» The 49ers have the seventh selection on Thursday and rumor has it they want to move down and acquire more picks. If they stand pat, they need a top-flight quarterback, but is there one in this draft? Missouri's Blaine Gabbert might be available, though some would question taking him that high. Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller likely will be gone. If Patrick Peterson still is on the board, the 49ers might do well to take the talented cornerback out of LSU.

» The Raiders don't have a first-round pick. They own the 48th selection, which would come Friday in the second round. This draft will be the first for former Pacific quarterback Hue Jackson as Raiders head coach, though owner Al Davis will have the final say.

» The pain caused by JaMarcus Russell still lingers, so Oakland likely will pass on drafting a quarterback with issues, like Arkansas slinger Ryan Mallett, who might slide to the Raiders after admitting he has used drugs. Better if Oakland takes a defensive back or an offensive lineman or fills another area of need.

» Ricky Barnes had the lead briefly Sunday during the final round of The Heritage in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and finished tied for fourth. The former Stockton resident and Lincoln High graduate moved into the top 50 in FedEx Cup points to No. 47 overall with his second top-10 finish this season. Barnes also moved up 25 spots to No. 48 on the money list. He's taking a deserved break this week and is not entered in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

» Entering Monday's start against the Athletics, Angels right-hander Jered Weaver was the first pitcher since 1990 to sport a 5-0 record through his team's first 18 games. Who did the same in '90? Answer below.

» The prospect exists that the second round of the NBA playoffs might not include the Lakers, Spurs, Mavericks or Magic. All have been pushed hard by lower seeds thus far.

» Hard to believe the former owner of the Brewers, Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, essentially owns the Dodgers. MLB seized operations of the once-proud franchise, and Selig appointed former Rangers president and U.S. ambassador Tom Schieffer, whose brother Bob hosts "Face the Nation," to run the club in place of Frank McCourt, who steered the Dodgers into financial trouble.

» Answer: In 1990, Dave Stewart of the Oakland A's had a 5-0 record through his team's first 18 games.

» The Thunder had another successful season at the box office. Stockton ranked second in the ECHL in attendance, averaging 6,382 fans per game - a 6 percent increase from the previous season - and more than 200,000 fans watched them at Stockton Arena for the sixth season in a row.

2011 NFL Draft: Top 10 Defensive Players Oakland Raiders Should Draft

The Oakland Raiders have a talented defense, but they may need to add some more players in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Nnamdi Asomugha and Michael Huff will be testing the open market when free agency starts. Odd's are they won't be coming back to Oakland. While the Raiders have players on their current roster that can fill the holes, it's important to try and find some younger guys that have the ability to step in and produce.

Let's take a look at ten defensive players the Raiders should look at in this years draft.

Fan opinion: 5 reasons the MLB All-Star Game is better than other All-Star games

5 reasons why the Major League Baseball All-Star game is better than the all star events for other sports? I think it's a common assumption that the MLB All-Star Game is the best from the perspective of the fans and viewing audiences. But why? The 2011 MLB All-Star Game will be much more anticipated, watched and enjoyed in comparison with the rivals in football, basketball, racing and hockey.

Here is my list of five reasons why the MLB All-Star Game is the ultimate tribute to the best players in its respective sport and why.

1) The game counts toward something
Each year the outcome of the MLB All-Star game determines which league gets to host home field advantage for the World Series. Like it or not, the MLB All-Star game is always going to mean more than other sports all-star events just for that reason. That means there is an extra pressure on each individual player to help either the American League or National League emerge with a meaningful victory. That also means the league managers will not substitute just to get a particular player in the game early. Most players get to get an at bat in the MLB All-Star game but you'll see many position players stay in a much longer duration than you might see in the NBA All-Star Game or NFL Pro Bowl.
2) The Home Run contest is the best All-Star event
Say what you will about the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. I would much rather see the MLB Home Run hitting contest as a preview of the All-Star game. There isn't really anything that can truly match the spectacle of a Home Run hitting contest. In person, the fans get an incredible view of players hitting baseballs so hard the cover appears to be coming off. On television, fans get a great view of just how powerful some of the Major League baseball players are. Slam dunking might get a little more of an edge for the creativity. But there is no way basketball can rival the pure power and hand eye coordination from Major League baseball players during the Home Run contest during All-Star week.

3) Best Pitchers vs. Best Batters
This one on one match up during the MLB All-Star game is much better than a one on one match up during the NBA All-Star Game. In the NBA, Kobe might guard LeBron from time to time with some often "phantom don't get me hurt" defense. In the MLB All-Star Game, pitchers aren't about to give in to the best batters in the game. In other words, Roger Clemens would have never took it easy against Barry Bonds. It just didn't happen in the MLB All-Star Game-even before the game officially counted towards home field advantage. In baseball, you truly get to see the best pitchers throwing against the best hitters in an individual match up. That is unrivaled by the other sports.

4) Dramatic Endings
Baseball typically provides a much closer game than many of the other All-Star events. That means there is a lot more emphasis placed on strategy in the late innings. That means the MLB All-Star game is usually more watchable for the duration. Think about it. How many times have you turned off the NBA All Star or NFL Pro Bowl after just sampling a bit of the action. You would be hard pressed to find many sports fans who turned off the MLB All-Star Game before it was completed.

5) Players Take This Game Seriously
It's obvious that the players involved in the MLB All-Star Game play it as an actual game. Other All Star Events seem to be viewed by many of the players as an exhibition. In other words, let the fans see a little something and don't get hurt. In the Major League Baseball All Star Game, players typically go all out based on pride and the fact that this game counts towards something. The 2011 MLB All-Star Game, like other such events in the past, will be held during the middle of the season when baseball players are in mid-stride. The fact that the NFL plays it's Pro Bowl after the season usually sums up what kind of energy level you may get from the All-Stars in lovely Hawaii. When the 2011 All-Star Game takes place, baseball players are just warming up for the second half of the season.

Those are my five reasons why the MLB All-Star Game is better than any of the other sports. When is the 2011 All-Star Game? The 2011 All Star Game this season is July 12, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona. Just like many other years, the All-Star Game will once again stand out as the best such event for the major sports.
